Rian Hughes
Rian Hughes is, simply said, the man who started it all for me. It took place in the first weeks of my second year of studies to become a graphic-designer. Our visual communication teacher had brought a book containing some of Hughes’ illustrations, and told us to try our hand at working with a similar style, using what we had learnt during software classes. I wasn’t convinced. To tell the truth, I wasn’t convinced at all. Then I tried seriously, because even if I didn’t like the assignment, I always did things seriously. Upon seeing my firsts results, albeit awkward and not worth being shown, I started to think: “And why not peruse it further? It was interesting to draw, let’s admit it”.

Rian Hugues is an illustrator and fonts designer who lives in London. In the past ten years, his works have known various applications such as logos, greeting cards and posters, including several for the “Springtime in…” Eurostar advertisement campaign. His style in vivid and noticeable, in a much 50s and 60s-inspired fashion. He has also designed typefaces for FontShop’s FontFont range, and earned a Campaign Press Awards Silver in 1996 for his advertising typography.
The book that introduced me to his works is called Device (link on the picture hereabove). Samples of his illustrations are also available on his website, Device Fonts.
